UNESCO World Logic Day 2025

January 14, 2025
there was a popular science event in honour of UNESCO World Logic Day.

The event consisted of two parts: a lecture and a workshop.

Lecture How One King ‘Taught’ Syllogistics to His Dogs: Lev Lamberov told us about an insignificant and little-known, yet fascinating, story from the history of logic. Dogs were often depicted in engravings devoted to logic, and in the early 17th century there was a debate at Cambridge University, involving King James I and Charles, Prince of Wales, about whether dogs could compose syllogisms. Why is it that for over two thousand years, researchers have been interested in the question of whether dogs have logic, and if they do, what kind of reasoning they can do?

Workshop How to Stop Being Afraid of Logic and Love Correct Reasoning: Aleksey Kislov, Olga Kozyreva and Ilya Gushchin showed how to use the methods of formal logic in everyday life. Participants of the masterclass learnt tactics for detecting logical errors and communicative tricks, learnt how to draw correct conclusions from insufficient information, and learnt how to compare alternatives when there are no obvious criteria for their comparison.

The meeting was held in Russian, online participation was not provided.

Start time: 19:00 Yekaterinburg time (UTC+5).

You can get more information on the event page on the Yeltsin Center website.
